A great benefit of membership in CMGS is the ability to learn and hone your craft. We offer a variety of classes from gemstone faceting to dichroic glass to wire wrapping. They are usually held in our fully-equiped workshop at the Henegar Center in on New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, Florida. Members may signup for classes at their 1st monthly meetings but may not attend a class until they have attended 2 meetings. (Be aware that some classes have a wait-list, so please be patient.)

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Cabochon Cutting (Beginning)

None $30 2-3 weeks
Description: This is an introductory class on cutting cabochons (domed opaque stones). The following general topics will be covered in the class: marking and trimming a rock slab, shaping the stone on a grinding wheel, doping the stone for ease of handling, doming the top of the stone, smoothing the stone, and polishing the stone to a high gloss. Students will also be taught the proper operation and care of a trim saw and a cabbing machine. Each student will complete a minimum of 3 stones.
Materials: Small slabs are supplied by the club. Larger slabs or special material must be supplied by the student.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Cabochon Cutting (Advanced)

Beginning Cabochon Cutting or cabbing experience. $30 3-4 weeks
Description:
This class concentrates on techniques for cutting non-standard cabochons. These include: teardrops, cushions, baguettes, stars, hearts, double sided cabs, crosses, etc. This is a fast paced intensive course. Each student will complete a minimum of 4-6 stones.

Materials: Slabs must be supplied by the student. Some material may be available from the instructor.
 
CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Casting Class

Beginning Silversmithing Class $30 3 weeks
Description: This is an introductory class on the process of lost wax casting. The class will cover the use of wax models, proper investing for wax model burnout, safety for melting metals, centrifugal and vacuum casting, proper break out of the cast model, and model finishing. Students will learn the proper safety and operation of a burn out oven, torch, centrifugal caster, and vacuum caster.

Each student will complete a minimum of 2 pieces.
Materials: Students must provide or purchase silver. All other materials are supplied by the club.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Chain- Maille’ Jewelry (Beginning)

None $30 4 weeks
Description: This class provides the student with an introduction to one of the popular and fastest growing areas of jewelry making. Chain-Maille’ Jewelry is based upon the protective armor worn by medieval knights. The old designs have been updated for use with precious metals to make beautiful chains, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc. These are easily made and do not require any soldering. Students will learn the proper way to open/close jump rings, basic patterns of linking the rings to form intricate chains, and finishing techniques to make the chains into wearable jewelry. The class will consist of a couple of pre-selected projects teaching the basic techniques followed by other projects which students can individually select. Students will learn to cut their own jump rings. Projects will be done in Sterling Silver; but other metals can be used. Students will complete 4 different projects..
Materials: Kits with pre-cut jump rings will be available from the instructor for the first project. Wire to cut the jump rings for the remaining projects will be available from the instructor or students can bring their own.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Chain-Maille’ Jewelry (Advanced)

Chain- Maille’ Jewelry (Beginnning) $30 4 weeks
Description: This class assumes that the student is proficient in cutting jump rings, opening/closing jump rings, and linking the rings into chains. The class will introduce the student to such advanced techniques as non-round jump ring shapes, jump rings made from different wire shapes, beaded enhancements, mixed metals, dangles, drapes, and many other enhancement techniques that can be applied to traditional designs to make them very unique. We will also examine some more complicated patterns and learn approaches to doing them which make the process much easier. The class will consist of one pre-selected project utilizing non-round jump rings followed by other projects which each student can individually select. The class notes will present many different suggestions for projects that feature the techniques that are presented in the class. Each student will complete a minimum of 4 projects.
Materials: Students are encouraged to bring their own sterling silver wire and clasps. Wire, beads, crystals, and findings will be available from the instructor for students who do not have their own.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Cold Connection (Beginning)

none $30 3 weeks
Description: This is an introductory class on basic Cold Connection techniques (no soldering). The following general topics will be covered in the class: different type of attachments, hammering, and coloring with liver of sulfur. Most of the projects will be done in copper and maybe some brass for contrast.

Students will also be taught the proper operation and care of the drill press, hole punches, and the disc cutter. Each student will complete a minimum of 3 projects.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Enameling

None $30 3 weeks

Description:

This is an Introduction to Enameling on Metal. It will concentrate on basic techniques. The following projects will be completed in the class: Simple Enameled Pendant, Sgraffito, Swirling, Stenciling, and Stamping. Students will also be taught the proper operation and safety rules for a kiln. Each student will complete a minimum of 5 projects. All projects will be done on copper.
Materials: All materials are supplied by the club.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Faceting

none $30 3 weeks
Description: This is an introductory class on cutting faceted gemstones (transparent stones similar in appearance to diamonds). This class will consist of cutting a standard round brilliant stone. The following general topics will be covered in the class: choosing rough material, stone doping, meet point faceting system, facet cutting, transferring stones, and facet polishing. Students will also be taught the proper operation and care of a faceting machine. Each student will complete a minimum of 1 stone.
Materials: Facet rough is supplied by the club. Special material must be supplied by the student.

Fused Glass (Beginning)

Description: This is an introductory class on making jewelry objects by fusing pieces of colored and dichroic glass in a kiln. Students will learn glass cutting, grinding, assembly, decoration, and fusing. Each student will complete a minimum of 8 projects.
Materials: Materials may be purchased from the instructor.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Fused Glass 2

Previous fused glass and kiln firing experience $30 4 sessions
Description: The Fused Glass 2 class will add to and refine your skills. Some but not all of the following will be offered: kiln firing schedules, finishing techniques to include channels, grooving, self-bail, drilling, cutting for wirewrap, manipulation, inclusions, decals, etching, bubbles, making a bracelet, earrings, using outline technique and use of band saw, Genie, and drill.
Materials: Recommend purchasing glass before class starts. Many supplies will be available in the class.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Precious Metal Clay (PMC)

none $30 1 session
Description: This is an introductory class on jewelry making with Precious Metal Clay (PMC). PMC is moldable clay similar to pottery clay. It is made with an organic binder and finely ground pure silver. The student will learn several clay texturing and shaping techniques. Upon completion of texturing and shaping the clay is fired in a kiln which produces fine silver. Cleaning and polishing produces an exquisite piece of jewelry. Each student will complete 1 project.
Materials: PMC is available for purchase from the instructor.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Silversmithing (Beginning)

none $30 3 weeks
Description: This is an introductory class on jewelry fabrication with sterling silver sheet and wire. The class: teaches the basic fabrication of a bezel cup, a wire shank, assembly of the ring, and setting of a cabochon type stone. Students will also be taught the proper operation and safety of a torches, tools, and polishing equipment. Each student will complete a ring and a second piece of their choice.
Materials: Students are encouraged to bring their own silver. Silver kits may be available from the instructor for students who do not have their own silver.

CLASS TITLE PREREQUISITE FEE DURATION

Wire Wrapping (Beginning)

none $30 4 weeks
Description: This is an introductory class on the creation of wire wrapped jewelry. Each student will have the opportunity complete a bracelet, a ring, a wrapped coin, and a wrapped faceted stone pendant.
Materials: Students are encouraged to bring their own square and half round wire. Wire or wire kits will also be available for purchase. Students must provide their own coin and cab.
